Searches for the term “Lockdown in India” saw a sharp rise on Google on Tuesday, coinciding with the sixth anniversary of the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown announced on March 24, 2020. The sudden spike revived memories of the pandemic years, even as ongoing global tensions added to public anxiety.

During that time, words like lockdown, social distancing, quarantine, isolation and “new normal” became part of everyday vocabulary. Memories of the hardships faced by migrant workers returning home also resurfaced. Years later, a section of people now seem to be sensing similar fears again, despite there being no official statement from the Centre about any fresh restrictions.

According to Google Trends, interest in the phrase surged overnight across both metros and smaller towns. The spike came even though neither the Centre nor state governments have indicated any plans to impose a new lockdown.

Why is 'lockdown' trending again?

The word ‘lockdown’ has once again appeared in India’s trending search list. But why has it suddenly resurfaced years later? Experts say this is not due to fears of a new coronavirus outbreak or just the anniversary of the pandemic, but rather because of current international developments.

The ongoing war in West Asia has brought back memories of those difficult days. The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and disruptions in fuel supply have triggered concerns across multiple sectors. As a result, many people are wondering whether such a crisis could lead to a lockdown-like situation again. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent reference to the COVID period has further added to this anxiety.

On Monday, while addressing the Lok Sabha on the Iran war, the Prime Minister mentioned the COVID period to underline the seriousness of the situation. He said, “We all need to unite now and be prepared for all kinds of situations, just as we did during COVID.” The remark was made in the context of explaining the LPG crisis in the country.

Is there a possibility of another lockdown?

COVID was a global crisis that affected not only public health but also economies worldwide. The ongoing conflict in West Asia has impacted the ‘lungs’ of the global economy- gas and fuel supply. The Strait of Hormuz, often seen as the ‘respiratory route’ of this system, plays a crucial role in global energy flow. With tensions between Iran, Israel and the US, this supply route is under pressure.

However, the Centre has clarified that there is no reason to panic. There is no need for a lockdown due to fuel shortages or any other reason. Citizens have instead been advised to use resources responsibly.

Overall, the sudden rise in searches for ‘lockdown’ in 2026 appears to be more of a psychological response: a mix of pandemic memories and current geopolitical uncertainty- rather than any real threat.

What happened four years ago?

On March 24, 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a nationwide 21-day lockdown when India had around 500 COVID-19 cases and 50 deaths. The decision was taken to control the spread of the virus. The lockdown brought the country to a halt, empty streets, migrant workers struggling to return home, and a sudden shift to online work and education. The impact of that period still remains fresh in public memory.

Around the anniversary of this date in 2026, searches for ‘Lockdown in India’ surged again. The spike also coincided with the Prime Minister’s mention of the COVID period a day earlier, prompting many to wonder if a similar situation could return.

However, authorities have clearly stated that there is no threat of a new lockdown at present.
