As election results pour in today, attention shifts from campaigning to counting rooms. The process of counting votes in India is tightly controlled by the Election Commission of India. It follows a fixed system to ensure accuracy, transparency and trust.

Counting begins early in the morning at designated centres. These centres are secured and monitored by officials, security personnel and observers. Only authorised staff and counting agents from political parties are allowed inside.

What's the first step to vote result counting?

The first step is the counting of postal ballots. These include votes cast by service voters, government officials on duty, and absentee voters. Each postal ballot is checked carefully. If it meets all guidelines, it is counted. This step often gives the first early trends of the day.

After postal ballots, the focus shifts to Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Each EVM is taken out from strong rooms in the presence of candidates or their agents. The machines are verified using unique identification numbers to ensure there is no mismatch.

Before counting begins, the seals on the EVMs are checked. This is done openly so that all stakeholders can see the process. Once cleared, counting officials begin tabulating votes from each machine.

Counting happens in rounds. Each round includes votes from a set number of EVMs. After every round, results are noted and shared with candidates’ agents. This round-wise system helps maintain transparency and allows for cross-checking at every stage.

What is the significance of VVPAT verification?

A key part of the process is VVPAT verification. VVPAT stands for Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail. Slips from selected machines are matched with EVM counts to confirm accuracy. This adds an extra layer of trust to the system.

If any discrepancy or complaint arises, officials can pause counting and verify the issue. Candidates can also request recounting in specific cases, as per rules.

Once all rounds are completed, the Returning Officer compiles the final result. The winner is declared only after full verification. The result is then officially recorded and shared.

As India watches results today, this detailed and structured process ensures that every vote is counted fairly and correctly.
