The Jangipur Trinamool Congress has raised concerns over alleged harassment of citizens during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. On Monday afternoon, a delegation led by Jangipur organisational district Trinamool Congress president and MP Khalilur Rahman submitted a memorandum to Murshidabad’s District Election Officer and District Magistrate Nitin Singhania at the District Magistrate’s office in Baharampur. The memorandum highlighted claims that the SIR exercise was causing unnecessary difficulties for residents.

Trinamool alleges harassment in SIR process

Minister of State for Power, Akhruzzaman, alleged that the Election Commission issued various directives at different times to favour the BJP. He claimed that nearly one lakh people are being called for hearings in each assembly constituency and added that, given the volume of hearings and the limited number of Electoral Registration Officers available, it would be impossible to conduct SIR hearings for all of them. He further accused the Election Commission of being influenced by the BJP in removing the names of genuine voters.

Jangipur MP Khalilur Rahman said that the Commission, based in Delhi, is issuing orders that affect millions of people, calling them for hearings over so-called logical discrepancies. He noted that among those summoned are elderly citizens and pregnant women, for whom attending hearings is nearly impossible. He urged that the number of camps be increased and added that the Chief Electoral Officer has been alerted to ensure that no valid voter’s name is removed.

BJP responds to Trinamool allegations

According to district administration sources, the memorandum has been sent to the Election Commission of India as a proposal, giving importance to the ruling party delegation’s demands. BJP’s Jangipur organisational district president Subal Chandra Ghosh said, “Using the administration, Trinamool wants to disrupt the SIR work. They want to win again by keeping the names of infiltrators and illegal voters on the list. But this time it won’t happen.”
