The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) announced on Tuesday, March 17, that it will contest 291 seats in the West Bengal elections. It has left three Hill constituencies in Darjeeling for the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM), led by Anit Thapa. The press conference took place at Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence in the afternoon.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday alleged that the BJP is “afraid of us” and is now attempting to stoke panic among the people of Bengal by fuelling concerns over an LPG and petrol crisis.

While the CPI(M) and BJP have released their candidate lists in phases, the Trinamool Congress is set to announce nominees for all 294 Assembly seats, as stated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during her press briefing.

294 seats in the West Bengal Assembly

The candidate selection is expected to reflect a mix of sitting legislators, new faces and strategic picks across constituencies. With 294 seats in the West Bengal Assembly, the list will be crucial in shaping the contours of the contest. Political observers are also watching for possible changes in key constituencies and whether the party opts for continuity or introduces fresh candidates in certain areas. With the Election Commission setting the stage for the polls, political parties have moved quickly to finalise their line-ups. The BJP has already released its first list of 144 candidates, while the Left Front has announced names.

New joinings ahead of candidate list

Just hours ahead of the announcement, the Trinamool Congress has inducted several new members into the party. Among them is former Bengal cricketer Shib Shankar Pal, a right-arm fast bowler who represented Bengal for years and also played for India A. Currently associated with cricket coaching, he runs his own academy. Educationists Tanushree Hansda and Mohammad Abdul Matin also joined the party. Legal professional Mangal Soren was inducted at the party’s Jhargram district office. Their inclusion highlights the party’s outreach to individuals from diverse professional backgrounds. The latest additions come amid a series of recent high-profile inductions. BJP MLA from Kurseong, Bishnu Prasad Sharma, recently joined the TMC, followed by CPM leader Pratikur Rahman. In another significant development, Dipendu Biswas, a former TMC MLA who had switched to the BJP, rejoined the party after five years. He formally returned at the Basirhat party office, where 27 other public representatives cutting across Congress and BJP also joined the Trinamool Congress.
