As winter sets in, thieves are breaking in, consecutive thefts at temples

Multiple temples in West Bengal’s Howrah and Jalpaiguri districts were targeted in overnight thefts, with valuables worth lakhs stolen; police have begun investigations.

Allegations of theft at multiple temples on a winter night. On Saturday night, temple theft incidents occurred in Kulgarchia in Howrah as well as in Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri. After Uluberia and Udayanarayanpur a few days ago, now Kulgarchia.

A theft incident occurred at the ISKCON temple in Kulgarchia on Saturday night. The devotees had closed the temple at night and gone home. A devotee who came to perform the morning aarti at the temple on Sunday morning found the temple door lock broken.

Later, other devotees came and saw that the miscreants had turned the temple's CCTV camera, cut its wire, entered the temple and fled with all the brass and bell metal utensils of the deity, cash from the donation box and money kept inside the temple. The devotees claim that items worth lakhs of rupees have been stolen. Uluberia police station has started investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, a temple in Dhupguri town was also robbed on Saturday night itself. They cut the window grille, entered and escaped with gold and silver jewelry along with cash from the donation box.

Initial estimates suggest gold and silver jewelry worth over 15 lakh rupees has been lost. The moment of theft has been captured on CCTV. Police sources report that three people had entered inside.

Here, temples of Kali, Thaneshwari and Durga are located under the same roof. The gang of thieves entered all three temples. Such theft incidents raise questions about security. Temple committee member Rajesh Kumar Singh informed that at least 15 lakh rupees worth of jewelry is estimated to have been stolen. However, they are concerned about such a theft incident at a temple located beside the city's most important and busiest market. Dhupguri police station has started the investigation.
