No trains, no updates: Green Line Metro suspension sparks commuter anger

Green Line Metro services remained suspended since morning without any official announcements, leaving commuters stranded and frustrated.

Passengers on the Metro's Green Line have faced extreme hardship since morning. On Sunday morning, passengers lined up to catch the Metro from Howrah Maidan. Meanwhile, the Metro gates were closed. Yet there was no advance announcement anywhere. Passengers were completely clueless. It was later learned that signalling work had continued throughout Saturday night. Along with some other technical work. Therefore, the Metro did not run at the scheduled morning time. Metro's Chief Public Relations Officer, SS Kannan, told Ei Samay online that the Metro on the Green Line was supposed to resume from 12 noon on Sunday.

Passengers complained that on Sunday, buses and trains are anyway all relatively fewer. Moreover, in this bitterly cold weather, getting vehicles in the morning was difficult. Those who thought they would catch the Metro from Howrah to Kolkata on a holiday morning found this situation completely ruined their plans. Coming to Howrah Maidan, they found the Metro gates closed.

According to a passenger named Meghna Mandal, "Had to face extreme hardship early in the morning. Coming to Howrah Maidan station, I saw the Metro gates closed on both sides. No announcement, no one could even say what had happened. Then I took a bus and came to Esplanade."

She added, "On the way, I saw that both gates of Mahakaran station had their shutters down too. Service closed, yet not a single announcement? There are many elderly people and children as well. I couldn't understand what the point of troubling people like this was."

Passengers demanded why no advance announcement was made about the service being suspended from the morning. What was the point of troubling passengers like this? Many are saying that usually when Metro doesn't run at scheduled times, the news is announced in advance through various media. But questions are being raised as to why it wasn't announced that Metro wouldn't run on the Green Line on Sunday.

However, at 12:31 PM, Kolkata Metro finally announced that due to ATO testing, Metro service from Howrah Maidan-Salt Lake Sector Five had resumed from 12 noon that day.
