Storm shift in Bengal: Nor’westers, heavy rain and 60 kmph winds likely today

IMD issues thunderstorm and heavy rain alert for South and North Bengal, with winds up to 60 kmph. Kolkata may see evening showers.

After days of intense heat, a fresh weather system is set to bring relief across Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms, gusty winds and heavy rainfall in several districts of South and North Bengal on Tuesday.

Nor’westers are likely to sweep across parts of the state, with wind speeds expected to reach 50–60 kmph. However, the intensity of rain and storms is expected to gradually ease from Wednesday, with drier conditions likely to return from Thursday.

The current state of Kolkata's weather

From Tuesday morning, Kolkata has had cloudy skies. However, bright sunshine is appearing intermittently. Though pedestrians suffered from heat throughout the day, there is a possibility of rain in the city of Kolkata towards the evening.

However, from Wednesday, the amount of rainfall will gradually decrease. Tuesday's minimum temperature in the city was 22.0 degrees Celsius, which is 4.1 degrees Celsius below normal. The maximum temperature was 34.0 degrees Celsius, which is 1.4 degrees Celsius below normal.

How will the weather be in South Bengal today?

On Tuesday, several districts in South Bengal could experience the fury of nor'westers. There is also a heavy rainfall warning. The weather department has announced that the possibility of storms and rain is higher after noon. Special alerts are in place for Hooghly, East Burdwan and North 24 Parganas.

Besides, light rain with thunder and lightning could occur in Kolkata, Howrah, South 24 Parganas, East and West Burdwan, Bankura and West Midnapore. Along with this, gusty winds could blow at speeds of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour in coastal districts. For this reason, fishermen have been prohibited from going to sea.

How will the weather be in North Bengal today?

The weather department has announced that there could be nor'westers in Malda on Tuesday. There is a possibility of heavy rainfall in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar. All districts have the possibility of storms and rain with thunder and lightning. Besides, scattered light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning could occur in all districts of North Bengal. Along with this, gusty winds could blow at speeds of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour.
