As vote counting begins on Monday after the two-phase Assembly elections, West Bengal is witnessing both political heat and changing weather conditions. The India Meteorological Department has indicated that several parts of the state, including Kolkata, may receive rainfall through the day, offering some relief from the rising temperatures.
According to the weather office, Kolkata may experience spells of rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds on Monday. Wind speeds could pick up significantly during these weather events, adding to the intensity of the conditions.
Orange alert for North and South Bengal
An orange alert has been issued for both North and South Bengal, signalling the possibility of impactful weather. The forecast points to widespread rainfall activity, with conditions favourable for thunderstorms in multiple districts.

Meteorologists have attributed the current situation to a trough line stretching from Punjab to Nagaland. Alongside this, a strong cyclonic circulation persists over Bangladesh and adjoining regions. These systems are drawing in moisture from the Bay of Bengal, increasing the likelihood of rain across the state.
Heavy rainfall warning in select districts
Light to moderate rainfall is expected across all districts of South Bengal on Monday. However, certain areas may receive heavier showers. North 24 Parganas, Hooghly, and East Bardhaman are likely to witness rainfall ranging between 7 and 11 cm at isolated locations.
Strong winds are also expected to accompany the rain, with speeds estimated between 50 and 60 km per hour across South Bengal districts.
