Primary school zonal sports were organised at Midnapore's Collegiate ground. On Tuesday, during the games, bees suddenly attacked. At least 6 students along with several teachers and parents were injured. While the students were released after first aid, one parent is undergoing treatment at Midnapore Medical College Hospital.
The district education department office is located beside that ground. The beehive is in a tree within the district education department premises. According to sources, during the games, a kite struck the beehive. Following this, the swarm of bees flew to the ground and started stinging the students and others present there.
On Wednesday, local Councillor Sourav Basu went to inspect the ground along with education department officials. He informed that discussions have been held with the education and forest departments regarding breaking down the beehive. Arrangements will be made to demolish the beehive immediately.

It may be noted that students regularly play sports at the Midnapore Collegiate ground. Others also do morning walks and exercise at this ground. As a result, there are concerns that they too could be injured in bee attacks at any time. Various games and school sports competitions are now regularly organised at this ground. Sourav Basu said that some sports competitions and other events take place at this ground almost every day. City residents regularly exercise here. So they don't want such accidents to happen again in the future.
