Repeated tremors hit Kolkata and wider Bengal; what was the epicentre?

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake shook Kolkata, Howrah, and several districts of South Bengal, with the epicentre reportedly traced to Bangladesh’s Satkhira region.

An earthquake was felt in Kolkata on Friday at around 1:23 PM, with the city experiencing repeated tremors. The quake measured 5 on the Richter scale and was also felt in neighbouring Howrah.

Several residents reported receiving earthquake alerts on their mobile phones shortly after the tremors were felt.

Tremors were felt across several districts of South Bengal on the day, triggering panic in parts of Kolkata and adjoining areas. As the earthquake was experienced in multiple government offices, banks and hospitals, people were immediately evacuated onto the streets and offices were cleared as a precaution.

Preliminary reports suggest that the epicentre was located in Bangladesh. According to Bangladeshi media sources, the Satkhira region was the centre of the quake. Tremors were also felt in several parts of Bangladesh. The earthquake measured 5.4 on the Richter scale.
