Communities often come together to support different valuable causes that matter and create meaningful change. Such initiatives not only raise awareness but also encourage unity, participation and most importantly, a shared sense of responsibility. A walkathon is set to be held in Kalimpong to raise awareness in the fight against cancer. The initiative, organised by Ei Samay and Himalaya Darpan, aims to bring the community together for a meaningful cause. The event will take place this Sunday at the city’s Mela Ground, and people from all walks of life are encouraged to participate and show their support.
There has been growing enthusiasm around running events in the hills, and local residents are eager to take part in this meaningful initiative. Several organisations have extended their support to the cause. 'Ei Samay' and 'Himalaya Darpan' have received support from SBI, Dwarika, Manipal Hospital, Dear Lottery, Royal Enfield, Zimba, and Red FM.

A walkathon is a community event where people come together to walk a certain distance in order to raise awareness or funds for a specific cause. Unlike competitive races, walkathons are usually non-competitive and open to people of all age groups and fitness levels. The focus is more on participation, solidarity and spreading a message rather than speed or performance.
The main difference between a walkathon and a marathon lies in purpose and intensity. A marathon is a long-distance running race, officially set at 42.195 kilometres, and it requires significant physical training and endurance. It is competitive in nature, with professional and amateur runners aiming for timing and rankings. A walkathon, on the other hand, involves walking instead of running, usually covers shorter and more flexible distances, and prioritises inclusivity and cause-driven participation over competition. While a marathon tests athletic stamina, a walkathon promotes collective action and awareness.
