A body of a second-year student from a private medical college in Durgapur was recovered late Saturday night from the boysâ hostel. The deceased has been identified as Labanya Pratap (21). His body was found hanging in the bathroom of the hostel around midnight.
Sources said Labanya was a resident of Patna, Bihar, and had enrolled in the college in the 2023â2024 academic session. His family has been informed. Police from the B-Zone outpost under Durgapur police station reached the campus soon after receiving the information. Following a preliminary investigation, the body was taken down and sent to the hospital morgue.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the death was a case of suicide or if there are other circumstances involved. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Classmates declined to comment on the incident. Police are also expected to speak with family members and close friends to ascertain whether the student had been under any academic or personal pressure.
Durgapur DC (East) Abhishek Gupta said, âA complete investigation of the incident will be conducted. Police will speak with the family members when they arrive.â Hospital authorities have not issued any statement so far. According to sources, the college administration informed the police about the matter via email.
