Messi G.O.A.T Tour's Kolkata event turned into a massive disappointment, leading to severe commotion and vandalism on Saturday. The football legend landed in Kolkata at midnight. Fans were eagerly waiting to greet their superstar from early morning. However, it all ended in disappointment. The event was called off by Messi's security team a couple of minutes after the football legend entered Kolkata's Salt Lake stadium.
Fallout at the G.O.A.T Tour
Earlier on his way to the stadium, Messi unveiled a 70-foot statue of himself, one of the tallest in the world. During his brief appearance in Kolkata, Messi acknowledged the dignitaries present on the field, signed a few jerseys, and waved to the crowd.
However, the proceedings concluded quickly, leaving many fans with only a fleeting glimpse of the footballer. Soon after Messi exited the field, chaos broke out at the venue. Fans started screaming āshame shameā. Just a minute later, fans started to run towards the ground, breaking all sorts of barriers.
Organisers are responsible
Opposition party leaders have blamed the ruling party leader, Mamata Banerjee and her party for causing such public disappointment. Trinamool Congress spokesperson Sudip Raha has issued a statement on his social media handle. He has stated that the organisers are responsible for the massive mismanagement in Messi's Kolkata tour. The State Government or the Trinamool Congress has no connection with it. The State Sports Minister, Aroop Biswas was present during the event as he was invited.
He also added that, if the state government didn't give permission for the event, then the opposition party would make a fuss about it. But it was seen that at the event, BJP workers tried to make a commotion at the stadium, hoisting saffron flags. He alleged that the BJP intends to cause chaos and disrepute to Bengal's name in front of the entire country.
Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee issued a statement where she said that an enquiry committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of Justice (Retd.) Ashim Kumar Ray, with the Chief Secretary and the Additional Chief Secretary, Home and Hill Affairs Department, as its members. The committee has been tasked with conducting a detailed enquiry into the incident, fixing responsibility, and recommending measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Police authorities have already detained the core organiser of the event Satadru Dutta.
