Sports Minister Aroop Biswas has expressed his desire to resign from the position. he has written a letter to the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, in this respect. Aroop Biswas's role in the Salt Lake Stadium fiasco on Saturday has been under major scrutiny.

Aroop Biswas wrote a letter dated December 15, 2025, to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He wrote, ā€œRespected Didi, You have constituted two investigation committees on the situation which arose at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan during legendary footballer Messi’s visit to Kolkata on December 13, 2025. I wish to resign from my position as Sports Minister to ensure an independent probe.ā€ The letter came into light after a senior Trinamool Congress leader posted the same on his social media accounts.

Officials under fire

The mayhem at Yuva Bharati on Saturday compelled the state government to constitute two investigation committees rapidly. The initial report and recommendations of the investigation committee had been submitted to the state secretariat Nabanna on Monday evening. Today, Chief Secretary Manoj Pant has show-caused the Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar.

Bidhannagar Police Commissioner Mukesh Kumar has also been show-caused for the incident, and he has been expected to reply to the notice within 24 hours. Bidhannagar Deputy Commissioner Aneesh Sarkar has been suspended, and a departmental inquiry has been ordered against him. Rajesh Kumar Singh, Principal Secretary of the Sports and Youth Affairs Department, has also been show-caused. Deb Kumar Nandan, CEO of VYBK, has been removed from his position.

Aroop Biswas is also the Minister of Power in the Government of West Bengal. Even if the Chief Minister gives assent to his wish to resign from the position of Sports and Youth Affairs minister, Biswas would still be a part of the cabinet. It has been reported that senior officials of the Sports and Youth Affairs Department have been summoned to the state secretariat soon after the minister expressed his desire to vacate the position.

CM constituted committee to investigate mayhem

Following the rampage and arson at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee promptly ordered the constitution of an investigative committee under the leadership of former judge Ashim Kumar Roy. Chief Secretary Manoj Pant has issued the show-cause notices, suspension, and dismissal while the investigation is still on. Reportedly, the investigative committee has submitted its initial observations and recommendations on the entire incident.
