Security has been tightened across West Bengal's Murshidabad district as suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir goes ahead with his controversial foundation-laying ceremony for a structure he has chosen to name "Babri Masjid." The event is scheduled for Saturday in the Chetiani area of Beldanga-2 block, despite his suspension from the party and widespread criticism.

Kabir pushes ahead despite suspension

Kabir was suspended earlier this week after the Trinamool Congress objected to his choice of name for the proposed mosque. Party leader Firhad Hakim had questioned why it was being called “Babri Masjid,” while reiterating the party’s stance against mixing religion with politics.

However, Kabir has maintained that he would go ahead with the event. On being told about his suspension at the Chief Minister’s meeting, he declared publicly that the foundation stone would indeed be laid on December 6. This morning, he called the function “historic” and said a large turnout was expected. An imam brought from Saudi Arabia would lead the function, and several guests were invited. The programme is scheduled between 12 pm and 2 pm.

As per a report by ANI, Safiqul Islam, a resident of Uttar Barasat, was seen carrying bricks on his head, saying they would be used for the mosque's construction. Kabir is expected to be present with nearly 2,000 volunteers.

Heavy deployment across the district

The state administration has reinforced the district with several layers of security. Reportedly, forces began gathering at Beldanga police station since Friday afternoon as part of the larger arrangement stretching across Rejinagar and surrounding areas.

According to the state's submissions before the Calcutta High Court, 19 companies of CISF have been deployed, backed by units of the Rapid Action Force and an elaborate local police deployment. Two BSF companies remain on standby to secure the NH-12 stretch. In all, more than 3,500 personnel are likely to be deployed on the ground.

High court's direction

As per a report by the Times of India, a division bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul ordered the state to "strictly maintain" law and order and ensure the safety of residents. The court said the administration had already mobilised large contingents and left operational decisions to the administration.
