The West Bengal Sarva Shiksha Mission has taken another step towards transforming the state’s school education system with the launch of ‘Banglar Shiksha Classroom’, offering completely free, high-quality digital learning materials for students of government, government-aided, and government-sponsored schools.
This flagship initiative of the state school education department aims to ensure equitable access to quality education for students at all levels. The video classes, prepared by distinguished teachers from government schools across subjects, have already drawn attention within educational circles.
Digital resources expanded on Bangla Shiksha portal
According to sources at Bikash Bhavan, 404 subject-wise resources have so far been uploaded in the ‘Online Classroom’ section of the Bangla Shiksha portal. These digital lessons are designed to simplify every aspect of the curriculum and make it easier for students to understand.

Officials said this is only the beginning, as work is underway to create and upload more learning materials to further enrich the portal. Necessary guidelines have already been issued to District Education Officers (DEOs) and School Inspectors (Primary and Secondary DI) across all districts to ensure wide dissemination of this initiative.
Schools have been asked to share details of the digital classes with students, parents, and teachers. The matter has also been recommended for discussion during parent-teacher meetings (PTMs). In addition, displaying information related to these digital classes on school blackboards and notice boards has been made mandatory.
Bridging teacher shortages through technology
Meanwhile, several teachers’ organisations have pointed out that subject-wise teacher recruitment at the secondary and higher secondary levels has not taken place for a long time. As a result, students in West Bengal are reportedly lagging behind their counterparts in other states in subjects such as languages, mathematics, and social science.
To address this gap and make learning more engaging, the education department has also focused on televised classes. Drawing from the experience during the COVID-19 period, the department aims to use technology to deliver lessons by experienced teachers to students in remote and marginalised areas of the state.

Parthapratim Baidya, headmaster of Jadavpur Bidyapith, said, “The number of teachers in various subjects is inadequate in remote areas of the state. Again, a section of Class XI and XII students remain irregular for various reasons. In such a situation, this government initiative is certainly commendable to ensure that students do not miss any part of the syllabus.”
Alongside the Banglar Shiksha YouTube channel and classroom portal, subject-wise classes are also being broadcast on the central e-Vidya TV platform via West Bengal link channels 183 to 187. Channel 184 has been earmarked for primary classes, 185 for upper primary, while channels 186 and 187 are designated for secondary and higher secondary levels, respectively.
The process of collecting feedback from students and parents to assess the effectiveness of these digital platforms and television channels has also begun, officials said, to enable further improvements in the system.
