Ahead of his India visit, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States is prepared to expand energy exports to India, describing New Delhi as a “great ally and partner” at a time when global energy markets continue to face uncertainty.

Per a report by Hindustan Times, speaking to reporters in Miami on Thursday, Rubio said Washington is keen to strengthen energy cooperation with India amid concerns linked to the ongoing global energy crisis and disruptions caused by tensions involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.

“Well, we want to sell them as much energy as they'll buy. And obviously, you've seen I think we're at historic levels of US production, and US export,” HT quoted Rubio as saying.

Energy, trade and Quad talks on agenda

Rubio will visit India from May 23 to May 26 and is scheduled to travel to New Delhi, Kolkata, Agra and Jaipur. During the visit, he is expected to hold discussions on trade, defence, energy and regional security.

Calling India an important partner, Rubio said, “We do a lot of good work with them. And so it is an important trip. I'm glad we're able to do it because I think there'll be a lot for us to talk about,” he stated.

He also highlighted the importance of the upcoming Quad meeting in India. “We'll also meet with Quad there, which is important. I think my first meeting as Secretary of State was with the Quad. I'm glad we are able to do it now in India and we're going to do one later in the year as well,” HT quoted Rubio as saying.

Venezuela oil discussions also expected

Rubio said the US is already in talks with India to expand energy cooperation further. “We want them to be a bigger part of their portfolio. We also think there are opportunities with Venezuelan oil,” Rubio added.

His remarks came alongside announcements regarding a possible visit by Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodriguez to India for discussions related to oil sales.
