New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s slate of progressive candidates swept a closely watched set of Democratic congressional primaries on Tuesday, dealing a sharp blow to establishment-backed Democrats and underscoring the growing clout of the city’s democratic socialist wing.

Two sitting members of Congress, Adriano Espaillat and Dan Goldman, were defeated by candidates backed by Mamdani, according to Al Jazeera.

Fresh faces at the political supper table

Espaillat, who leads the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and is serving his fifth term, lost to Darializa Avila Chevalier, a democratic socialist who had once helped organize pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University.

Goldman, a two-term incumbent, was beaten by former city comptroller Brad Lander, who has long been associated with New York’s progressive politics and has often signaled support for the democratic socialist movement.

A third Mamdani ally, democratic socialist state Assembly Member Claire Valdez, also prevailed, defeating Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, the successor chosen by retiring US Representative Nydia Velazquez.

A contest with consequences far beyond Manhattan

The primaries matter beyond the individual races because New York’s Democratic contests determine the party’s nominees for the November midterms, which will decide control of Congress and shape the final two years of US President Donald Trump’s term.

Most of the city’s congressional districts are safely Democratic, making Tuesday’s winners likely to win in November as well. That reality turned the primaries into a referendum not only on the candidates themselves, but also on the political movement Mamdani is trying to build in New York and beyond.

The results represented a major gamble for the 34-year-old mayor, whose influence is rising, and a potential problem for national Democratic leaders who fear the party could move too far left before the midterms.

Champagne corks and sharpened differences

Mamdani marked the victories by moving across the city to celebrate with his allies, casting the result as proof that his election had opened a wider political chapter.

At Valdez’s celebration in Brooklyn, he said, “A year ago, it was not the end of a political movement. It was the beginning,” as supporters chanted, “DSA! DSA!” Later, at Avila Chevalier’s event in Manhattan, he said, “We are showing there is a new path for politics in our city and in our country.”

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who had campaigned against Mamdani’s candidates, tried to minimize the broader significance of the results. “We have agreed to strongly disagree,” Jeffries said. “There are 215 members of the House Democratic caucus. A handful of primaries that go in one direction or the other, in a given state or two, aren’t going to reshape who we are as House Democrats.”

Not every standard-bearer crossed the finish line

Jack Schlossberg, grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, fell short in a crowded race for the seat being vacated by retiring Representative Jerry Nadler. In that contest, establishment Democrats celebrated the victory of state Assembly Member Micah Lasher, a longtime government aide backed by party leaders, in a field that also included anti-Trump activist George Conway and Assembly Member Alex Bores, whose proposals to regulate artificial intelligence had drawn pushback from the tech industry.

Mamdani, who has spent his first six months in office drawing attention from both establishment Democrats and even Trump, had actively promoted the three congressional candidates who challenged the party’s preferred picks.
