A major legal settlement involving Google could lead to payouts for Android users across the United States. The case centres on claims that Android devices collected and transferred user data without proper consent, even when some privacy settings were turned off.

Who could qualify for the payout?

The settlement applies to people who used Android phones with cellular data plans between November 2017 and the settlement approval period, as per NDTV reports.

Some reports specifically mention California users between August 2016 and September 2023, while the wider class-action settlement covers users across the US who accessed the internet through Android devices using mobile data.

Users who were part of a separate California lawsuit known as "Csupo v. Google LLC" may not qualify under this agreement. Reports also stated that claimants are unlikely to need proof of purchase, though they may have to confirm Android device usage during the eligible period.

What was Google accused of?

The lawsuit alleged that Android devices transferred information to Google in the background without users’ knowledge or permission. According to the claims, data collection continued even when phones were idle, locked, or had location-sharing settings disabled.

The case also focused on the use of cellular data for these transfers. Plaintiffs argued that Google could have waited for Wi-Fi connections instead of using consumers’ mobile data plans.

Google denied wrongdoing but agreed to settle the case rather than continue lengthy litigation. The company said the lawsuit “mischaracterised standard industry practices that help keep Android safe”, according to NDTV.

How much money might users receive?

Reports suggest eligible users could receive up to $100, though the final payout will depend on the number of approved claims. Several outlets noted that the actual amount for most users may be much smaller once legal fees, taxes and administrative costs are deducted from the settlement fund.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for June 23, 2026. More information about the claims process is expected to be released once the settlement system officially opens.
