It has now been officially announced that Netflix’s Emily in Paris will come to an end following its sixth and final season, which will mark the end of another one of the platform’s most globally recognisable romantic comedies.

According to the statement from Netflix, production for the final season has already commenced in Greece, while more shoots are set to be done in Paris and Monaco.

Emily in Paris is all about Lily Collins playing the role of Emily Cooper, a young woman who moves from Chicago to France for a dream job, only to have her life become extremely chaotic due to her experiences there. She gained popularity after the first season was launched in 2020. In a video shared by Netflix, Collins addressed fans directly while announcing the show’s conclusion.

“After six unforgettable years of playing Emily Cooper, I’m here to share that this upcoming sixth season will be our final,” she said.

“Season six will bring you everything you love about the show and serve as the final chapter in Emily’s adventure of a lifetime.”

Final season begins with Greek getaway storyline

According to Netflix, the new season will continue from the cliffhanger ending of Season 5, where Emily’s complicated romantic interest Gabriel invited her on a trip to Greece through a postcard message.

The final season will once again feature returning cast members including Ashley Park, Lucas Bravo, Lucien Laviscount, Samuel Arnold and Bruno Gouery. Series creator Darren Star described the experience of making the show as “the trip of a lifetime.”

“As we embark on the final season, I am so grateful to Netflix, Paramount, and, most importantly, the fans who have taken this incredible journey with us,” Star said.

Netflix has not yet confirmed an official release date for the final season.

A global hit that shaped fashion and travel trends

Starting from its debut during the pandemic in 2020, Emily in Paris turned into one of the biggest pop culture phenomena on Netflix, sparking major debates about fashion, culture, and trends on various social platforms around the world. According to Netflix statistics, just in 11 days since its release, the fifth season gained 26.8 million views globally.

It contributed to the discussion of tourism regarding Paris, luxurious fashion, and lifestyle of travel in Europe. Its popularity even earned creator Darren Star recognition from Emmanuel Macron, who awarded him the Legion of Honour for helping spotlight France through the series.

Criticism followed the popularity

While the show was successful commercially, it was quite often criticised for being highly sanitised and unrealistic portrayal of Paris.

The criticism stemmed from the perception that the show depicted Paris as a “theme park version” of the city that was rife with stereotypes, fancy clothes and culture clashes. Still, the criticism did little to slow the show’s popularity, with Emily in Paris remaining one of Netflix’s most discussed international series throughout its run.

As Emily in Paris enters production of its sixth season that will be its last, Netflix appears poised to bid farewell to its romantic comedy period that has spanned over six years.
