Gunmen carried out a deadly attack in northern Nigeria, killing at least 30 people, according to police. The incident took place on Sunday evening, January 4, in Kasuwawan Daji village in Niger state. Several armed men stormed the village, opened indiscriminate fire, and set multiple houses on fire. Many residents are still reported missing.
What happened in Kasuwawan Daji?
Local people said the attackers arrived suddenly and began shooting at villagers. Homes were burned during the assault, forcing many residents to flee. Some villagers believe the attackers had been seen in nearby areas days before the attack, raising fears that it was planned.

Conflicting death toll claims
Niger state police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun said security forces have been deployed to rescue missing residents and restore peace. However, locals claim that no security personnel reached the village on Sunday. While police confirmed 30 deaths, residents say the toll is higher and could be at least 37. Families of the victims are reportedly too afraid to return to the village to collect bodies.
