Yunus aide Khuda Baksh Chowdhury quits as Bangladesh faces riots over Sharif Osman Hadi killing

Amid nationwide unrest after 'Inquilab Mancha' leader Sharif Osman Hadi's death, Bangladesh Home Ministry special assistant Khuda Baksh Chowdhury resigned as pressure mounted on the Yunus-led interim government.

Bangladesh is in turmoil over the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, one of the prominent faces of 'Inquilab Mancha'. Public riots were witnessed in various places. Following Hadi's death, during a rally at Shahbag on December 20, Inqilab Mancha demanded the resignation of Khuda Baksh Chowdhury, Special Assistant (Home Ministry) to Bangladesh's Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus. They have sought the swift arrest of the killers.

Khuda Baksh Chowdhury resigns

On Wednesday night, the press wing of Bangladesh's interim government's Chief Advisor announced that Khuda Baksh has resigned. The resignation letter was sent to Bangladesh's President, Mohammed Shahabuddin, who has accepted it. However, no separate explanation was provided regarding the reason for his decision.

Khuda Baksh was an associate of Bangladesh's Home Advisor. In November 2024, Yunus appointed three people as special assistants. They were given the responsibility of assisting the advisors of the Home, Health, and Education ministries. One of the three was former IG of Bangladesh Police Khuda Baksh Chowdhury.

Bangladesh in turmoil

After Osman Hadi's death, anarchy gripped Bangladesh. Vandalism and arson became commonplace. Additionally, the Yunus administration faced international criticism over the brutal murder of Dipu Chandra Das, a minority youth in Bangladesh.
