‘Why didn’t you tell us where the problem is?’: Abhishek Banerjee's last warning to EC, announces statewide protests

The Election Commission has so far failed to respond to any of the questions raised by the Trinamool Congress on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the party’s All India General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee said on Saturday.

During this week’s press conference, Abhishek announced that he would be travelling to Delhi on December 31 to meet Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and demand answers. “The Election Commission has not answered any of Trinamool's questions about SIR,” he added.

“The commission had said that 1.36 crore voters had some problem. But it was a common problem,” he asked pointedly, and added, “Why didn't you tell me where the problem is?”

Demanding transparency, the Trinamool leader asked, “Why couldn't anyone find out anything?”

“If the list is not published, the commission's office will be surrounded,” he went on to say. He also raised a provocative question, asking why there would be no FIR against the commission.

Abhishek Banerjee announces statewide protest from Jan 2

Turning his guns on the BJP, Abhishek claimed that not a single BJP MP raised any question during Zero Hour in Parliament on the issue. He remarked sarcastically, “They take votes from Bengal.”

He also announced that Trinamool would take its protest to the streets. From January 2, the party will launch a special programme, with public meetings and road shows planned across the state. The party will also release a report card highlighting 15 years of governance.

The Trinamool leader also noted that around 5.8 million names have already been omitted from Bengal’s electoral rolls. “How many Rohingyas and Bangladeshis are there among them?” he asked.

He also condemned an incident where a patty vendor was allegedly beaten during a Gita reading event organised by Hindu organisations in Dharmatala.
