After nearly two decades at Bihar’s most recognisable political address, Nitish Kumar has moved out of 1, Aney Marg and shifted to a new residence at 7 Circular Road.

End of a long stay at Aney Marg

On Friday, the official chief minister’s residence bid farewell to its longest-serving occupant. Nitish Kumar, who recently moved to the Rajya Sabha, vacated the bungalow that had become closely associated with his tenure.

He first moved into Aney Marg in April 2006, shortly after becoming chief minister. Apart from a brief nine-month period in 2014–15, when Jitan Ram Manjhi held the post, Nitish remained at the residence for nearly 20 years.

The bungalow itself has a long political history. It was designated as the chief minister’s residence by Lalu Prasad Yadav in 1990 and later expanded into its current form.

The move to Circular Road

Nitish Kumar left Aney Marg quietly, accompanied by aides, officials and security personnel. His belongings had already been shifted in advance, and after farewells to staff, he departed with his son Nishant for the new residence.

The new address at 7 Circular Road lies just behind the old bungalow but is also located near the residence of his political rival, Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Sources said preparations for the move had been underway for weeks. “We started the process about three weeks ago,” a source from the CM House said. “As Nitish Kumar had already lived at 7 Circular Road after his 2014 resignation, the house was readied as per his instructions. A stickler for rules, he had ordered the shift well before he formally resigned.”

Transition and continuity

During his time at Aney Marg, Nitish Kumar had set up a functioning secretariat within the premises and handled most official work from there. Some members of his team have since moved on, but a few close aides continue to remain with him.

Particular attention was given to moving his personal belongings, including his extensive collection of books.

Meanwhile, his successor Samrat Choudhary is expected to move into 1, Aney Marg within a month, marking the beginning of a new phase for the residence.
