The investigation into the deaths of four members of a Mumbai family has taken a new turn, with officials now focusing on possible poisoning rather than food contamination.

Watermelon link ruled out

Initial reports had suggested that the deaths were caused by consumption of watermelon, leading to panic in several parts of the city. However, authorities have since clarified that there is no evidence to support this claim.

According to findings by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), samples of the fruit consumed by the family showed no signs of contamination. "No artificial colour or chemicals were added to the watermelon to enhance its colour, sweetness or size," FDA officials said, per News18.

This has largely ruled out watermelon as the direct cause.

Family fell ill after meal

The incident dates back to April 27, when Abdullah Dokadia (40), his wife Naseem (35), and their daughters Ayesha (16) and Zainab (13) reportedly fell ill after consuming watermelon following a meal that included biryani. Shortly after eating, all four began vomiting and became semi-conscious.

They were taken to a hospital, but could not be saved.

Morphine traces raise concerns

Investigators are now examining the possibility of toxic exposure after forensic findings revealed traces of morphine in the victims' bodies. Morphine is a strong pain-relieving drug, and its presence has raised questions about how it entered their system.

Doctors also observed that the internal organs, including the brain, heart and intestines, had turned green; an unusual finding that may indicate exposure to certain chemicals or toxins.

Officials are now trying to determine the source of the substance. A detailed forensic report is awaited.

Authorities have not ruled out other possibilities. Experts are also examining whether bacterial contamination or a rare infection could have played a role.

A comprehensive analysis, including post-mortem and toxicology reports, is expected to provide clarity.

Market panic after early reports

The initial suspicion around watermelon triggered fear among consumers, particularly in areas such as Bhendi Bazaar and Pydhonie. Supplies dropped in some markets, while prices fell sharply in others due to reduced demand.

Traders have called for clear communication from authorities to restore confidence as the investigation continues.
