India’s airport infrastructure has received a global boost after Guwahati Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport were named among the world’s most beautiful airports in 2026 by Prix Versailles, an international award that recognises excellence in architecture, design and cultural identity.

The recognition places the two Indian airports alongside some of the world’s most notable aviation hubs, highlighting the growing emphasis on combining functionality with locally inspired design.

Guwahati Airport’s newly developed Ashtalakshmi terminal has been praised for showcasing the culture, craftsmanship and natural heritage of Northeast India. Designed as the primary gateway to the region, the terminal incorporates bamboo-inspired architecture, references to Assam’s renowned orchids and spacious, naturally lit interiors.

Reacting to the recognition, Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said the achievement reflects growing global appreciation for the Northeast’s cultural richness and architectural identity.

Airports designed around local identity

Navi Mumbai International Airport also secured a place on the prestigious list with its lotus-inspired design, which draws from one of India’s most recognisable cultural symbols. The project is expected to play a major role in easing air traffic pressure on Mumbai while serving as a landmark infrastructure development for the region.

Industry observers note that modern airports are increasingly being designed as cultural gateways rather than just transport facilities. The inclusion of Guwahati and Navi Mumbai highlights a shift toward creating travel hubs that reflect local heritage and offer visitors a distinct sense of place.

According to Prix Versailles, the selected airports stand out for their ability to blend architectural innovation, sustainability and passenger experience while remaining rooted in regional identity.
