The sudden leadership change at JPMorgan Chase that took place in early 2024 marked the abrupt end of Vis Raghavan's years-long career with the company. However, in a matter of days, the experienced banker landed a highly coveted job in the banking world by joining Citigroup as the Global Head of Investment Banking.

This fast-paced move, which was completed within just a weekend, soon caught people's attention in the finance industry.

From JPMorgan exit to Citi deal in 48 hours

Raghavan, a British-Indian investment banker, had spent several years in senior leadership roles at JPMorgan, overseeing investment banking operations across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Prior to that, he worked at Morgan Stanley, building expertise in capital markets and advisory services.

According to reports, he was informed during an internal reshuffle that his long-term role at JPMorgan was uncertain. Soon after, he entered discussions with Citigroup’s top leadership.

What followed was an unusually rapid hiring process. Instead of going through the bank’s ongoing executive search, Raghavan engaged directly with Citi’s senior management and board. By Sunday, an agreement had been reached, and the appointment was announced shortly after.

A high-stakes hire with a massive package

Raghavan’s move to Citigroup came with a reported compensation package of $52 million (over ₹430 crore), reflecting both his experience and the strategic importance of the role.

Citigroup had been conducting a structured global search for a new investment banking head, but the process was accelerated after Raghavan emerged as a preferred candidate.

Industry observers say the deal underscores how top-tier talent in global finance continues to command premium compensation, even as broader markets face uncertainty.

A career built on global dealmaking

As a seasoned financier known for his expertise in cross-border deals and building out franchises in various geographical locations, he is expected to further consolidate Citigroup's business in global advisory and capital markets.

His quick switch shows how competitive the world of finance is when it comes to acquiring leaders who can add value to their organisations.
