With the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) exams approaching, nervous energy is high in classrooms and homes alike. The Class 10 and Class 12 CBSE board exams for 2026 will start on February 17. This season is one of the most closely watched in recent years.

According to the new schedule, Class 10 exams are expected to end by March 11 while Class 12 exams will run until April 10. This year's exams are particularly important because several new rules and reforms, many introduced with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, are being implemented together for the first time.

As students enter the final stretch, here's a clear recap of what has changed and what they should remember.

Two Board exams for Class 10

The biggest change this year is the two-board-exam system for Class 10. The first exam will be conducted from February 17 to March 9 while the second exam will be held from May 15 to June 1.

Both exams will use the same syllabus. While the first board exam is required for all students and is mandatory, the second exam is optional and serves only as a chance to improve scores. Students are strongly encouraged to study hard for the February exam and not rely on the May exam to "fix things".

For the final result, the higher score from the two attempts will be used.

How many subjects can be re-attempted?

Under the new system, students can take the second board examination to improve their scores in up to three subjects.

The option is flexible across subjects, but students cannot retake all the papers. CBSE has also warned parents not to put unnecessary pressure on their children to take the second exam if they do not genuinely need to improve.

Entry curbs and dress code

Candidates should reach the exam centre well in advance as no one will be allowed to enter after 10 am. Candidates must wear their school uniform and bring their school identity card, the CBSE-issued admit card and only the allowed stationery items.

Candidates should visit the examination centre at least one day before the exam to make sure they arrive on time on the exam day.

Guidelines

Candidates and their parents, guardians must check all details mentioned in the admit card and sign at the designated place after verifying the particulars, including the photograph.

Prohibited items include mobile phones, smartwatches, electronic devices.

Candidates must read and follow the instructions provided on the admit card. They should also go through the amended rules on unfair practices mentioned in the CBSE circular.
