Jadavpur University has announced a new initiative to formally recognise its accomplished former students through the âDistinguished Alumni - JU (DA-JU) Awardâ, signalling a renewed push to reconnect with its global alumni network.
The decision was adopted during the Universityâs Executive Council meeting held on April 4, 2026. According to the plan, the university will honour its graduates in five different categories, which include academics and research, business and management, entrepreneurship, public service and philanthropy, as well as arts, literature, and creative expression. These awards will be meant to honour past achievements of the universityâs graduates while inspiring the present generation of students.
Focus on stronger alumni bonds
Vice-chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee told News Ei Samay that this is an extension of the institution's attempt to engage with alumni in a well-structured way.
âThe university is now making a more organised effort to reconnect with its former students, so they feel a deeper sense of belonging,â he said. He added that globally, universities treat alumni as long-term partners, an approach JU is now looking to follow.

While speaking about the initiative, Bhattacharjee acknowledged that the institution had not fully tapped into the potential of its alumni network earlier, even though many former students today occupy key positions across sectors. He said the initiative is aimed at addressing that gap and building clearer channels of engagement.
Recognition and industry linkages
The awards will be presented during the universityâs annual convocation ceremony each year. Eligible candidates must be living alumni who have completed a degree from JU and demonstrated sustained excellence in their respective fields.
University administrators believe that the engagement of alumni will not just stop with recognition, since their work experience may help update the curriculum and create better internships for students.
The selection process will be conducted by a committee comprising eminent individuals of national repute, with coordination by the ACER-JU Cell to ensure transparency and credibility.

âThrough this initiative, Jadavpur University reaffirms its commitment to recognising excellence, strengthening alumni engagement, and showcasing the enduring legacy of its graduates,â the institution said in a statement.
Officials also noted that the involvement of alumni members can contribute to academic advancement, especially in terms of industry involvement and mentorship programs for students.
In a related move, the university has approved a proposal for a âprofessor of practiceâ position in the mechanical engineering department, backed by a California-based alumni platform and aligned with University Grants Commission guidelines.
The DA-JU Awards, as the university said, are intended not only to honour achievements but also to foster a more active and lasting relationship with its alumni community.
