Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par is set to make its digital debut on Sony LIV on April 3, the platform announced on Monday, marking a shift from the actor’s earlier release strategy for the film.

The RS Prasanna directorial, which released in theatres on June 20 last year, will now stream during the Good Friday long weekend. The announcement was shared on the platform’s official social media handle with a note describing the film as “a heartwarming story of hope, heart and healing.”

Shift from YouTube-first strategy

The OTT release marks a departure from Khan’s earlier stance. The actor had initially said the film would skip streaming platforms and release directly on YouTube after its theatrical run.

The film was eventually made available on YouTube on August 1 last year on a rental basis. At a press conference in Mumbai, Khan had addressed the decision, saying, “I fold my hands and apologise because I lied when I said Sitaare Zameen Par wouldn’t be released on YouTube. I did it because I had no other choice… I have always strived to protect the theatrical business of my films.”

Film, cast and reception

Directed by RS Prasanna, the film features Genelia Deshmukh alongside Khan, with a supporting cast that includes Ashish Pendse, Aroush Datta, Aayush Bhansali and others.

Considered a spiritual successor to Taare Zameen Par, the story follows a basketball coach ordered by a court to train a group of neurodivergent individuals after a DUI offence. The film received largely positive reviews and earned over ₹265 crore worldwide.
