Hollywood's Maverick, Tom Cruise, pulls off a blockbuster twist at the age of 63, but this time, outside the silver screen, earning an honorary Oscar at the 16th Annual Academy Governors Awards on 16 November. The Academy acknowledged the four-time Oscar nominee for his relentless and revolutionary contribution to action films, having played the most influential roles in modern cinema. His filmography now spans nearly 45 films, stretching from earlier hits like Jerry Maguire to the blockbuster sequel Top Gun: Maverick.
The Award was presented by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Cruise’s collaborator on a movie yet to be released in October 2026.
Alongside Dolly Parton, Debbie Allen and Wynn Thomas, Cruise received his golden statuette at the Ray Dolby Ballroom, California.

What is an Honorary Oscar?
Honorary Oscars, now known as Governor Awards, are presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. According to the Academy’s official website, "these awards honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement in cinema and exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences."
Awards are presented in 3 categories: the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, and the Honorary Award.
The Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award is presented to a creative producer for their contribution to high-quality motion picture production, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award recognises individuals in the film industry who have brought upon phenomenal humanitarian efforts, and the Honorary Award is given to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the entertainment industry for several years.

Cruise’s emotional speech on his win
Cruise delivered an emotional speech in front of the audience at the Ray Dolby Ballroom. He reminisced about his four-decade-long journey as an artist in the Hollywood film industry. He also made sure to appreciate and honour other recipients of the award.
While receiving the award, Cruise said, "Making films is not what I do, it is who I am." He also expressed his gratitude for becoming a global star, saying, "It helps me to appreciate and respect differences. It shows me also our shared humanity, how alike we are in so, so many ways."
