Sony Pictures has officially released the first trailer for Resident Evil, and the upcoming reboot already looks dramatically different from the franchise’s earlier big-screen adaptations.
Directed by Zach Cregger, who earned praise for his horror work in Barbarian and the upcoming Weapons, the new film appears to embrace a far darker and more grounded tone rooted in psychological fear and survival horror.
Set for release on September 18, 2026, the movie moves away from the action-heavy formula that defined many previous Resident Evil films. Instead of focusing on trained fighters or iconic heroes, the reboot tells the story of an ordinary courier named Brian, played by Austin Abrams, whose routine delivery spirals into chaos after he becomes trapped during a deadly outbreak in Raccoon City.

Complete fresh storyline
One of the biggest surprises surrounding the reboot is the absence of beloved franchise characters like Leon S. Kennedy and Jill Valentine. Rather than retelling familiar storylines from the games, the film introduces an entirely original narrative focused on fear, confusion and survival through the eyes of an ordinary individual.
The trailer presents dimly lit hallways, disturbing imagery and horrifying encounters that suggest the reboot is prioritising tension and dread over explosive action. The atmosphere feels closer to the terrifying experience of playing the original games, where survival often depended on limited resources and constant uncertainty.
Cregger has openly explained that he wanted the movie to feel relatable to average viewers rather than portraying invincible heroes effortlessly battling monsters. Speaking about the project, the director said he imagined how a normal person, much like an average gamer would react if suddenly thrown into a Resident Evil nightmare. According to him, the protagonist is someone who would panic, struggle to survive and probably miss most of his shots in terrifying situations.
That creative decision appears central to the reboot’s identity. The trailer emphasises vulnerability and helplessness, creating a more immersive horror experience that feels personal and claustrophobic rather than stylised and action-driven.

Dark visuals
The trailer also teases horrific creatures and disturbing body horror elements that have already generated discussion online. One terrifying figure shown briefly in the footage has drawn comparisons to Baron Harkonnen from Dune because of its eerie and unsettling appearance.

Combined with sharp sound design, shadow-heavy cinematography and frantic pacing, the visuals suggest the reboot may become one of the darkest cinematic interpretations of the Resident Evil universe so far.
Alongside Austin Abrams, the film also stars Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry and Kali Reis. Sony has confirmed the movie will release in theatres and IMAX worldwide on September 18, 2026.
With its stripped-back storytelling, horror-first approach and focus on ordinary human fear, the reboot could mark a completely new chapter for one of gaming’s most iconic franchises.
