However, the films from Hollywood that belong to the horror genre rarely attract any attention in India without some support from the franchise or an extremely large budget. Nevertheless, such is the power of Obsession which has been able to achieve precisely this feat.

budget of less than $1 million, the film belongs to one of the most surprising success stories of 2026. Ever since the film hit Indian theatres on May 29, it has become the talk of the town, drawing huge crowds as well as the ire of the censor board.

A simple wish turns into a nightmare

Obsession follows Bear, a lonely music store employee who comes across a mysterious object known as the "One Wish Willow." Believing it can grant a single wish, Bear uses it to make his co-worker Nikki fall in love with him. What begins as a seemingly harmless desire soon spirals into a terrifying chain of events.

However, the more distorted Nikki becomes emotionally, the more Bear realises that he was not wrong; the wish brought a terrible curse upon him. No matter how hard he tries to fix things, the horror continues and results in devastating consequences.

The combination of psychological horror and supernatural elements has proven highly appealing to those who want a horror film that is unique and unlike anything they have seen before.

Obsession cuts stir online discussion

Despite the appreciation it garnered among viewers, the movie has also turned into an object of censorship controversy. Prior to being released in India, CBFC awarded it an Adults Only certificate but required a total of 38-second cuts from scenes containing graphic violence and sex. This action raised questions from some fans, who wondered why a film certified Adults Only required editing.

Some of the movie's viewers used the social media to complain about the necessity of cutting out scenes that were essential for understanding certain plot points.

Box office success surprises industry watchers

Despite its low budget, the film has done extremely well in terms of box office figures. According to the available data, Obsession earned ₹9.3 crore gross during the opening weekend in India and also managed to lure audiences even during the week days.

Interestingly, one of the reasons that stunned industry experts was that this horror movie outperformed a new Bollywood movie released on Monday.

Internationally, the film has already crossed the mark of $100 million which makes Obsession one of the most profitable releases of the year in comparison with its budget.

Bollywood weighs in

Growing popularity of this horror movie has also earned the endorsement of actors from Bollywood industry. Actress Ananya Panday revealed her love for the movie and added that she was unable to forget after watching the movie.

In the same way, actor Kartik Aaryan also gave his positive review on the movie by calling it the best horror movie of all time. He further requested people not to miss out on such a wonderful thriller movie.

As a result, due to word-of-mouth publicity and celebrity endorsement of the movie along with the debate over its censorship, the Obsession movie is no longer just a horror movie on a small budget.
