Large parts of northwest and central India are likely to witness a steady rise in temperatures this week, while several eastern states may experience thunderstorms and gusty winds, according to the latest weather bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department.
The IMD’s all-India weather forecast released on Sunday evening said heatwave conditions are expected to persist in parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat, while hill states such as Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may see rain and snowfall in the coming days.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also likely in several eastern and northeastern regions on Monday, March 9.

Heatwave conditions in north and west India
The IMD said temperatures in Delhi are expected to remain 5–8 degrees Celsius above normal for most of the week. Daytime temperatures in the national capital may hover between 36C and 39C until March 11, before dipping slightly later in the week as a western disturbance affects the western Himalayan region.
Heatwave conditions are likely to continue in Rajasthan, particularly in western districts, between March 8 and March 10.
Similar conditions are forecast for Gujarat, including parts of north Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch on March 9 and 10. Coastal areas in the region are also expected to experience hot and humid weather.
In Maharashtra, heatwave conditions may develop in the Marathwada region on March 10 and 11, while Andhra Pradesh could see hot and humid conditions in coastal districts and adjoining parts of Rayalaseema.
Rain, snow and thunderstorms forecast in several regions
While northern plains face rising temperatures, the Himalayan states could experience unsettled weather.
The IMD forecast said isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds may affect Jammu and Kashmir between March 9 and March 10, along with light rainfall or snowfall. Weather activity may intensify between March 10 and March 12 before easing later in the week.
Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are also expected to witness scattered rainfall and snowfall between March 10 and March 14.
Meanwhile, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 30–50 kmph are likely across several eastern states, including West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Sikkim, as well as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The IMD also said northeastern states could see scattered rainfall and thunderstorms between March 10 and March 14.
