In a major infrastructure push, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the much-awaited Delhi-Dehradun Expressway on April 14 during his visit to Uttarakhand. The high-speed corridor is expected to significantly transform travel between Delhi and Dehradun, reducing journey time from 5–6 hours to just around 2–2.5 hours.

Project scale and route

Built at an estimated cost of Rs 12,000–13,000 crore, the 210-km expressway passes through Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Starting from Akshardham in Delhi, the route covers key towns such as Baghpat, Baraut, Shamli and Saharanpur before reaching Dehradun. The corridor also integrates with major road networks like the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and Eastern Peripheral Expressway, ensuring smoother traffic movement.

Travel time cut to 2–2.5 hours

The expressway aims to eliminate congestion and delays that have long affected the Delhi-Dehradun route, especially during peak travel seasons. The reduced travel time is expected to result in fuel savings, lower emissions and improved efficiency for commuters and businesses.

Key features and engineering highlights

The expressway stands out for combining speed with sustainability and safety. One of its most notable features is Asia’s longest elevated wildlife corridor, spanning 12–14 km, designed to allow safe animal movement and reduce ecological disruption. Another highlight is the Dat Kali Tunnel in Dehradun, a 340-metre stretch equipped with modern lighting, ventilation and surveillance systems. Additional infrastructure includes 113 underpasses, 5 railway overbridges, around 76 km of service roads, and multiple entry and exit points. These elements ensure smoother and safer traffic flow across the route.

Boost to tourism and Char Dham connectivity

The project is expected to significantly benefit tourism in Uttarakhand, especially with improved access to destinations like Haridwar and Rishikesh. It will also enhance connectivity to the Char Dham route, making travel easier for pilgrims ahead of the annual yatra season.

Economic impact across states

The expressway is expected to boost trade, logistics and employment across the three states it connects. Improved connectivity could lead to the development of new economic hubs and support local businesses, particularly in smaller towns along the route.

Toll charges for commuters

While the expressway promises faster and smoother travel, commuters will have to pay a toll of around Rs 670–675 for a one-way journey. Despite the cost, the savings in time and fuel, along with a better driving experience, are likely to make it a preferred route. The highway will be fully FASTag-enabled for seamless toll payments.
