The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is considering suspending the preparation of hot meals on some trains if a nationwide shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) worsens, according to internal communications reviewed by officials.
The advisory has been circulated as part of a contingency plan to ensure that passenger catering services continue even if LPG supply disruptions affect onboard kitchens. Officials familiar with the matter said the plan is precautionary and would be activated only if cooking fuel shortages significantly disrupt operations.

Contingency measures discussed for train catering
The contingency proposal suggests that trains may temporarily shift from freshly cooked food to pre-packaged meals and ready-to-eat options if LPG availability becomes limited.
IRCTC manages catering services across thousands of trains operated by Indian Railways, including pantry car services on long-distance routes.
Preparing meals in train pantry cars and base kitchens relies heavily on LPG cylinders, making uninterrupted fuel supply critical to normal catering operations. Officials said the contingency plan also advises catering vendors and contractors to review their fuel reserves and maintain alternative arrangements to minimise disruption for passengers.
Wider concerns over LPG supply
The review comes amid concerns about tightening LPG availability across parts of the country due to supply chain pressures and rising demand.
Railway officials said passenger services would remain unaffected even if catering arrangements change temporarily. The aim of the contingency plan is to ensure passengers continue to receive food during journeys, even if menu options are adjusted. IRCTC has not yet announced any immediate change in catering operations and said the plan remains under internal review.
