Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar on Wednesday urged the United Nations Security Council to designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation, as the ongoing US-Israel war with Iran entered its 12th day.

In a message posted on X, Saar said Iran's recent actions posed a serious threat to global security. "The Iranian regime's recent actions underscore that its aggression constitutes a direct threat not only to Israel, but to regional and international peace and security. I urge the UN Security Council to condemn Iran and immediately designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization," he wrote.

Saar also said he had addressed a letter to the United States ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, who is currently presiding over the Security Council.

Israel pushes UN action against IRGC

The IRGC is considered the ideological arm of Iran's military establishment. It was formed after the 1979 Iranian revolution to protect the country's clerical leadership. Over the years, the organisation has expanded its influence and now controls or owns companies across several key sectors of Iran's economy.

The United States has already designated the IRGC as a terrorist organisation. The European Union also followed with a similar move in January after Iran’s crackdown on mass protests, Vanguard reported.

The renewed diplomatic push comes amid escalating hostilities between Iran and the US-Israel alliance. The conflict intensified after the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iran on February 28. The attacks reportedly killed Iran's supreme leader and triggered a wider regional confrontation.

Iran claims attacks on US and Israeli targets

Amid the escalating conflict, Iran's Revolutionary Guards said they had launched attacks on US military positions in Kuwait. According to the IRGC, missiles and drones struck the al-Udairi helicopter airbase, the Mohammed al-Ahmad naval base, and the Ali al-Salem airbase. The statement also claimed that a US naval facility in Bahrain was targeted, ANI reported.

Iran's army separately said it struck several Israeli targets, including the country's military intelligence agency, a naval base in the northern port city of Haifa, and an Israeli radar system.

Meanwhile, large crowds gathered in Tehran to attend funerals for several senior Iranian commanders killed in the US-Israeli strikes. Television images showed thousands of mourners participating in the ceremony, as reported by ANI.

The humanitarian impact of the conflict is also becoming visible. According to the Iranian Red Crescent Society, nearly 20,000 civilian buildings have been damaged so far. Preliminary assessments show that 19,734 structures have been affected, including hospitals, schools, and aid facilities. The organisation said 77 medical centres, 65 educational institutions, and 16 of its own facilities were among those damaged.
