Google has long dominated the internet and web browsing space, and to maintain its leadership, the company has taken a major step that could reshape the future of browsing. In 2026, Google Chrome has evolved from a traditional browser into an AI-powered browser with the integration of Google’s homegrown AI model, Gemini.
How Google Chrome got AI-enabled
Google Chrome has remained the preferred browser for nearly 80% of internet users and continues to dominate the global browser market. Now, Google is transforming Chrome into a smarter, AI-powered browsing platform with the integration of Gemini AI.
While the feature has already been available globally for some time, the company is now expanding it to more countries, including India, Canada and New Zealand. The Gemini AI assistant inside Chrome will be available for users on Mac, Windows and Chromebook Plus devices in these regions.
Initially, the feature will be rolled out to desktop and iOS users. Android users will not get the full integration immediately, but they can still activate Gemini by holding the power button, which triggers the AI assistant.

Making browsing more intuitive
Google announced on Wednesday that the new feature aims to make browsing more intuitive, secure and helpful for users. As part of the rollout, Gemini will support more than 50 languages, including several Indian languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu and Tamil.
“Google today announced it is bringing many of Chrome’s latest AI features, including Gemini in Chrome, to users across India,” the company said in a release.
Charmaine Dsilva, Director of Product Management for Chrome at Google, said: “The browser is where we get work done, learn new things and connect with the world. “With AI built directly into Chrome, we’re aiming to make browsing the web even more intuitive, secure and helpful, and for users to have more proactive and intelligent experiences. We’re thrilled for India to be one of the first markets to experience this transformation after the US, underscoring the country’s enthusiasm and potential for driving the future of AI and emerging technologies across the globe,” Dsilva said.

With Gemini integrated into Chrome, users will be able to multitask more efficiently by accessing AI assistance directly within the browser without switching tabs. Users simply need to click the Gemini icon located at the top-right corner of the current tab and start interacting with their personalised browser assistant.
