Climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk said on Monday that he has been discharged from Medanta Hospital in Gurugram and will travel to Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi before returning to Ladakh.

Wangchuk made the announcement in a post on X. His hospital stay followed days of treatment after he ended a hunger strike tied to the agitation around the NEET paper leak.

Wangchuk prepares to leave Delhi after a turbulent stretch that began at Jantar Mantar and moved through hospital care in the capital.

From protest grounds to hospital wards

Wangchuk had joined the agitation on June 28 and remained on an indefinite fast for 26 days. He was forcibly shifted to Safdarjung Hospital on July 18, where he said he felt he was being kept in detention, before being moved to Medanta following a Delhi High Court order.

The broader sequence places his latest statement at the end of a protest phase that moved from public demonstration to medical intervention and now towards a return to Ladakh.

A gentler chapter begins

In his post on X, Wangchuk wrote, “I’m being discharged from the hospital. He will be going to Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and then back to the mountains.

He also thanked the doctors and staff at Medanta Hospital, Gurgaon. In a video message Wangchuk said, “I am getting discharged from the hospital today. I have started eating again and am recovering well.”

He looked visibly relieved after days of medical monitoring and public attention surrounding the fast.

The journey comes full circle

Wangchuk’s stated route is now clear. Rajghat first, then back to the mountains. He intends to visit the Gandhi memorial before returning.

The discharge closes one chapter of the protest story but leaves Wangchuk publicly aligned with the same symbolic sequence he said he followed before the agitation began.

For now, his focus appears to be on recovery and then the journey home.
