Mirabai Chanu wins India’s first gold medal in Glasgow
Mirabai Chanu continued her outstanding record at the Commonwealth Games by winning the women’s 48kg title. The 31-year-old lifted a total of 190kg, recording 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk. Her total was 22kg higher than Nigeria’s Ruth Asuquo Nyong, who finished second with 168kg.
The victory marked India’s first gold medal at the Glasgow Games and added another major achievement to Mirabai’s already decorated Commonwealth Games career.

Mirabai Chanu adds fourth Commonwealth Games medal
The latest gold also extended Mirabai’s remarkable record at the Commonwealth Games. She first reached the podium with a silver medal in Glasgow in 2014 before winning consecutive gold medals at the Gold Coast Games in 2018 and Birmingham in 2022. Her latest triumph in Glasgow took her overall Commonwealth Games medal tally to four.
Her consistency across four editions has made her one of India’s most successful weightlifters in Commonwealth Games history.
Rishikanta Singh claims silver with Games record in snatch
Earlier in the day, Chanambam Rishikanta Singh delivered an impressive performance in the men’s 60kg event to secure the silver medal.
The Manipur weightlifter was flawless during the snatch competition. He successfully lifted 116kg and 119kg before clearing 121kg on his final attempt, setting a new Commonwealth Games record in the discipline.

He entered the clean and jerk in the lead and opened successfully with a lift of 143kg. Rishikanta then attempted 148kg and later 151kg but could not complete either lift. He finished with an overall total of 264kg.

Malaysia’s Mohamad Aniq Kasdan won the gold medal with a Commonwealth Games record total of 273kg, while Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Mboya secured bronze with 260kg.
After the event, Rishikanta revealed that a knee problem affected him during the clean and jerk after he had gone into the second phase of the competition as the leader.
