A fresh spell of thunderstorms and rainfall is expected to affect several parts of north India in the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing weather alerts for Delhi and neighbouring states. The forecast comes after days of intense heat and rising temperatures across the region, offering the possibility of temporary relief from scorching weather conditions.

According to the IMD, a western disturbance is likely to influence weather patterns over northwest India from Monday onwards. As a result, states including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and parts of Uttar Pradesh are expected to witness thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and light to moderate rainfall over the next few days.

Delhi under rainfall and thunderstorm alert

The weather department has issued a yellow alert for Delhi for Monday and Tuesday. Forecasts suggest that the national capital may experience cloudy skies along with light rain, thunderstorms and strong winds during this period.

The IMD stated that wind speeds may reach 30-40 kmph during thunderstorms and could occasionally gust up to 50 kmph. Sudden weather changes are expected mainly during evening and night hours. Authorities have advised residents to stay alert, especially during lightning activity and strong winds.

The rainfall is expected to bring a drop in daytime temperatures, which have remained above normal in many parts of the city over the last week. Several areas in Delhi recently witnessed hot and humid conditions, increasing discomfort for residents.

Weather changes expected across north India

Apart from Delhi, weather conditions are likely to shift in several northern states due to the incoming western disturbance. Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh may witness scattered rainfall along with thunderstorms and gusty winds. Some parts of Rajasthan are also expected to receive light showers.

The IMD has noted that isolated hailstorm activity cannot be ruled out in certain regions. Hill states such as Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may also receive rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm activity during this period.

The fresh spell of rain is expected to continue intermittently for a few days before weather conditions gradually stabilise later in the week.

Relief from heatwave-like conditions

Many parts of north India have been struggling with rising temperatures and heatwave-like conditions in recent days. Several cities recorded temperatures above seasonal averages, leading to concerns over prolonged exposure to extreme heat.

Meteorologists say the incoming rainfall and cloud cover are likely to reduce temperatures temporarily and provide relief from harsh daytime heat. Cooler winds and thunderstorms may also improve overall weather conditions in urban areas that have been facing dry and humid weather.

However, experts caution that humidity levels could rise after rainfall in some regions, especially in densely populated cities like Delhi.

Advisory for residents and commuters

The IMD has advised people to avoid standing under trees or near electric poles during thunderstorms. Residents have also been urged to stay indoors during lightning activity whenever possible.

Commuters may face traffic congestion and delays due to sudden rainfall and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Authorities have asked travellers to check weather updates before planning long-distance journeys over the next few days.

Officials continue to monitor the evolving weather system closely as changing atmospheric conditions are expected to influence weather activity across north India throughout the week.
