Mumbai Indians could be heading for a major transition after a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, with reports suggesting that changes may extend beyond the future of captain Hardik Pandya.

The five-time champions endured a difficult season and failed to meet expectations, prompting the franchise to reportedly review its long-term plans. While speculation continues over Pandya’s future with the team, the management is also believed to be considering changes to the squad’s senior core.

Major reset under consideration

According to a TOI report, a source informed, “ During a mid-season review, a senior player suggested that India's young batter Tilak Varma, who has been with MI for a few years now, is the ideal person to be appointed captain next year.”

Hardik Pandya’s position has come under scrutiny following the team’s struggles. Reports claim the all-rounder could move on from the franchise, although no official decision has been announced. Mumbai Indians are also said to be exploring potential leadership options should a captaincy change take place.

"The management is also likely to phase out a senior batter and give him a 'different' role. Basically, MI need a reset, and that refresh button needs to be pressed as soon as possible.” The source addedd.

Senior batter may be moved out of playing role

The reported overhaul is not limited to captaincy. Mumbai Indians are also considering reducing the on-field role of a senior batter and shifting him to a different position within the franchise setup.

While the player’s name has not been revealed, the move is believed to be part of a wider strategy aimed at refreshing the squad and creating space for younger talent. The management reportedly feels that a gradual transition is necessary to help the team return to title contention.
