Rishabh Pant’s tenure as Lucknow Super Giants captain has come to an end after the wicketkeeper-batter decided to step down from the role following two consecutive disappointing IPL campaigns. The franchise confirmed the development, marking the end of a two-season leadership stint that began with great expectations.
LSG had secured Pant for a record ₹27 crore ahead of the 2025 season and entrusted him with captaincy responsibilities as the face of a new project. The move was seen as a major statement by the franchise, which was looking to build a long-term core around the Indian star. However, results failed to match expectations.
Lucknow Super Giants disclosed the development on social media, saying Rishabh approached the franchise with this request and we have respectfully accepted it," LSG Director of Cricket Tom Moody expressed his thoughts saying, "These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for everything Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as captain. Our focus now is on the collective - rebuilding and restructuring to reach the best standards."
Two difficult seasons under Pant
Lucknow Super Giants could not qualify for the playoffs in either of the two seasons under Pant’s leadership. The 2026 campaign proved particularly challenging as the team finished at the bottom of the points table with just four victories in 14 matches.

Despite showing glimpses of his batting brilliance and registering a century during the season, Pant struggled to inspire a turnaround in the team’s fortunes. Inconsistent performances with both bat and ball left LSG out of contention early in the tournament.
Rebuild phase begins
As Rishabh Pant is now stepped down as captain, questions on the management have been triggered, over involvement of owner Sanjiv Goenka has sparked debate. It remains to be seen whether he will remain a key member of the squad, LSG will now begin the search for a new leader ahead of the next season.

The change signals the start of a rebuilding phase for the franchise after back-to-back disappointing campaigns. The management is expected to evaluate several options before naming a new captain, with the focus likely to be on creating a stronger and more balanced unit.
For Pant, stepping away from leadership could help him concentrate fully on his batting and wicketkeeping as he looks to rediscover his best form and guide the team through performances on the field rather than from the captain’s role.
