The IPL 2026 league stage is heading into its decisive phase, with the race for playoff spots tightening among the top teams. While franchises like Chennai, Delhi, and Kolkata remain firmly in contention, an external factor now threatens to disrupt their plans at a crucial juncture.

Sri Lanka tour creates uncertainty

Sri Lanka’s upcoming tour of the West Indies in June has emerged as a major concern for several IPL franchises. The series, scheduled to begin on June 3, will feature two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is. This timing overlaps directly with the IPL playoffs, which begin after May 24 and culminate in the final on May 31.

As a result, Sri Lankan players currently participating in the IPL could be called up for national duty, forcing them to leave their franchises right before or during the playoffs. This potential absence could significantly impact team combinations and strategies at the business end of the tournament.

Key players likely to be affected

Several prominent Sri Lankan cricketers are part of IPL squads this season. Pathum Nissanka has been a regular presence at the top of the order for Delhi Capitals, while Dushmantha Chameera is also part of their setup, though with limited opportunities so far. Kolkata Knight Riders could miss the services of Matheesha Pathirana, a key pace option.

Sunrisers Hyderabad, too, may feel the pinch, with Kamindu Mendis and Eshan Malinga in their squad, the latter being a consistent starter. Royal Challengers Bengaluru could also be impacted if pacer Nuwan Thushara is called up.

With teams like RCB almost assured of a playoff berth and Rajasthan Royals and SRH well-placed, the absence of overseas players at such a critical stage could alter the balance of the competition. For sides like Delhi Capitals and KKR, who are still battling for qualification, losing key contributors might prove to be a decisive setback in their playoff push.
