Mumbai Indians were dealt a significant setback ahead of their IPL 2026 clash against Delhi Capitals, with captain Hardik Pandya ruled out due to fitness concerns just before the game on April 4. The late development created a ripple effect in the camp and among fans, forcing a reshuffle in both leadership and team composition.

Why did Hardik Pandya miss out?

In Pandya’s absence, Suryakumar Yadav stepped in as captain. Leading at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Suryakumar confirmed at the toss that Pandya was unfit and had been rested as a precautionary measure.

Mumbai made multiple changes to their playing XI. New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner replaced Pandya, while Deepak Chahar and South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch were also included. Meanwhile, experienced pacer Trent Boult and spinner Allah Ghazanfar were left out of the lineup.

Suryakumar Yadav said about Hardik He's not well, doesn't look good, so he was not fit for today's game. So, just getting into his shoes today. (On the win against KKR) If you win the first game after 13-14 years, there's a lot of positivity in the camp, and we're very happy, but completely different venue here from Wankhede. We have to take good responsibility and have a good game here.

On the other side, Delhi Capitals, led by Axar Patel, opted for continuity. Riding on momentum from their previous win, they retained the same XI. After winning the toss, Axar chose to bowl first, signalling confidence in his bowling unit.
