A new word that is being used to define a new phenomenon at workplaces is "job hugging." The phrase is becoming more popular as more and more people are choosing to stick to their current job rather than moving to a different company.

The new word refers to workers holding on to their existing jobs mainly due to the lack of certainty within the job market. Instead of exploring new opportunities, many employees prefer the stability of a familiar workplace and steady income. The trend comes at a time when hiring is slowing down within different industries.

Why employees are choosing stability

Unlike in the post-Great Resignation era, when job-hopping was the norm, today's employees view job-hopping as a danger. Career expert Vicki Salemi said the trend reflects caution among employees.

“Workers are holding on tighter than ever, but not because they’re complacent, because they’re cautious.” said Vicki Salemi, and it was cited in a report by Moneycontrol. Employees' concerns about layoffs, inflation, and economic conditions have made them rethink job-hopping. Employees' perceptions about technology and automation, including artificial intelligence, are also affecting job-hopping.

Survey shows trend could last until 2027

Data suggests the behaviour is becoming increasingly common.

According to the Monster 2025 Job Hugging Report, around 75 per cent of employees said they plan to remain in their current roles until at least 2027. The survey, conducted among 1,004 employed workers in the United States, found that 48 per cent of respondents said fear and economic uncertainty were the main reasons they were staying put, rather than job satisfaction.

About 27 per cent cited salary as the biggest reason for staying in their jobs, while 26 per cent pointed to job security. The report also noted that 59 per cent of respondents believe job hugging is becoming more common, and 63 per cent think the trend will grow further in 2026.

Staying too long may slow career growth

Although stability is achieved through the same job, experts warn that there are some disadvantages associated with it. For instance, workers who stay in the same job without any prospects of advancing may feel stagnant over time. Their motivation may dwindle, and their chances of advancing professionally may be reduced.

The Monster survey revealed that 94 percent of workers believe that job-hopping has some disadvantages, such as burnout or missed chances because workers are reluctant to take up other jobs.

Companies are now focusing on retaining workers

This trend is also being witnessed among companies.

After the Great Resignation in 2021 and 2022, when many employees left their jobs, companies struggled to replace experienced staff. As such, many companies are now shifting focus from hiring workers to retaining those who are already working for them. In today’s labor market, it appears that both workers and companies are cautious.
