An Indian professional who was on an H-1B visa in the US is presently stuck in India due to an emergency situation. She had to return to India to care for her sick mother. However, due to an unexpected delay in obtaining a visa appointment to return to the US, her job and financial situation in the US are presently in an uncertain state.

The situation was brought up on the social media platform Reddit. A Reddit user stated that their friend was forced to return to India because of an emergency. The emergency was the serious deterioration of her mother’s health. What was meant to be a short vacation has now become an indefinite waiting period because it is presently difficult to obtain a visa interview.

Emergency trip turns into uncertain wait

According to the Reddit post, the woman travelled to India urgently after learning about her mother’s deteriorating health. However, after arriving in India, she has been unable to secure a timely visa appointment required to re-enter the United States.

“A friend of mine had to urgently fly from the U.S. to India because her mother became very sick. Now she’s stuck,” the user wrote while explaining the situation online.

The delay has put her in a rather awkward position. She has built a life in the United States over the past few years. Until she knows when she can go back, her work life and personal life are in limbo.

Financial commitments add to stress

The woman reportedly owns a house in the US and has several ongoing financial responsibilities, including a mortgage and a car loan. These payments continue even though she is currently unable to return to work.

The Reddit post states that the uncertainty is adding up as a source of stress. If the situation drags on, she may have to sell some of her assets, including her house.

"Imagine building a life in another country for years and suddenly being unable to return because you can’t get a visa slot,” the post said.

Challenges for H-1B visa holders

The Reddit post also asked others to share their experiences or any tips that may help her get through the situation.

For H-1B visa holders, international travel may cause problems in returning to the US because a new visa appointment may be necessary. Recently, international travel has made it more difficult for H-1B visa holders to return to the United States because of increased processing time and limited available interview slots.
