Dry, irritated eyes in winter? Here’s why the problem increases and what you can do

Dry eyes worsen in winter due to low humidity, dehydration, heater use, and increased screen time, but can be relieved with proper hydration, eye rest, warm compresses, and a nutrient-rich diet.

With the onset of winter, many people begin to experience eye discomfort. Eye irritation, a gritty sensation, redness, or frequent tearing. In medical terminology, this is called 'dry eyes' or the drying up of eye moisture. Why does this problem suddenly increase in winter compared to monsoon or summer? How can you get relief from this problem through home remedies?

Why does the 'dry eyes' problem increase in winter?

Decreased humidity in the air

During winter, the air becomes much drier than normal. As a result, the water layer on top of the eyes begins to dry up quickly. This makes it difficult to retain natural moisture in the eyes.

Use of heaters

Many people use room heaters to keep their homes warm in winter. This makes the indoor air even drier, which reduces eye moisture.

Drinking less water

Many people drink less water than needed because they feel less thirsty in the cold. When the body becomes dehydrated, it affects the eyes as well. Eye moisture begins to dry up.

Increased screen time

Not because of winter, this problem persists throughout the year. Increased time spent in front of mobile phones, laptops, or TVs is one of the main causes of dry eyes. When staring at screens, the blinking rate decreases, making the eyes even drier. At the same time, blue rays damage the eyes.

Age and hormonal factors

Among elderly people or women, dry eye problems are relatively more common in winter due to hormonal changes.

How to get relief through home remedies?

Drink adequate water

Try to drink at least 8–10 glasses of water daily. Hot water or mildly warm beverages help maintain moisture in both the body and eyes.

Apply warm compress

Soak a clean cloth in lukewarm water and place it on the eyelids for 5–10 minutes. This activates the eye glands.

Eyes need rest

Follow the 20-20-20 rule—every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This reduces pressure on the eyes. Give importance to sleep as well. After working continuously for an hour, give your eyes a 2-minute rest. Using mobile phones while lying in a dark room is absolutely not allowed.

Eat nutritious food

Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish, walnuts, and flaxseed, help reduce eye dryness. Include vitamin A-rich foods like carrots and spinach in your diet.

Avoid rubbing your eyes

Even if your eyes itch, don't rub them repeatedly. This can worsen the problem. Although dry eyes are very common in winter, neglecting them can increase the problem. If the problem persists, definitely consult a doctor. Do not use any medication on your own.
