Keeping a mobile phone in the front pocket may seem harmless, but mounting scientific evidence has raised concerns about its possible impact on male reproductive health.
A Times Now report says prolonged close exposure near the groin could affect sperm count, motility, and overall fertility, while also noting that more research is needed before a direct cause-and-effect link can be firmly established.
Dr. Jyoti Tripathi, fertility specialist at Nova IVF Fertility, says, âYou might think thereâs no harmâ in putting a phone in the front pocket, but more studies are showing an effect on male reproductive health with prolonged, close exposure. Experts point to two main mechanisms: radiofrequency radiation and heat. According to the report, the concern is that both could place stress on sperm quality over time.
How are radiofrequency radiation and heat a concern?
Radiofrequency exposure is believed to increase oxidative stress in cells, which can damage sperm DNA and reduce motility, the ability of sperm to swim efficiently. Heat is another concern because the testes function best at a temperature slightly lower than core body temperature. Even a small, sustained rise in heat around the groin may interfere with sperm production, lower sperm count, and affect overall semen quality. Researchers note that while findings vary across studies, both mechanisms are seen as possible contributors to reduced fertility over time.

Keeping your phone in the bag saves sperm in your scrotum
A 2014 study titled "The influence of direct mobile phone radiation on sperm quality," which was published in the Central European Journal of Urology, discovered a relationship between mobile phone radiation exposure, DNA fragmentation, and decreased sperm motility.
These findings suggest that mobile phone use may have a negative influence on semen parameters; however, the quality of evidence varies between studies.
Dr. Tripathi is also quoted as saying, âEven a slight temperature rise can negatively impact fertility over time,â while Dr. Madhu Patil says the adverse effects of phone pocket storage are âusually temporary in nature.â
The solution? Carrying the phone in a jacket pocket or bag, limiting prolonged exposure and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are among the practical steps suggested by experts.
