Just a day before this year’s Durga Puja, Saturday, a young man died after being electrocuted while working at a puja pandal in Sonarpur.

Biswajit Saha (36), a resident of the Subhash Park area. was busy with electrical lighting work at the Shanti Sangha Club on Subhash Park Third Lane when he suffered an electric shock. Several others were present at the pandal, attending to last-minute preparations. They quickly rescued Biswajit and rushed him to Subhashgram Rural Hospital. But,doctors pronounced him dead, upon arrival.

The puja organizers maintain that they had always known Biswajit to be exceptionally skilled in all electrical work. They claim that all necessary safety measures had been put in place. Despite these precautions, they are at a loss to explain how this tragic accident occurred.

Notably, just last Monday, the city of Kolkata experienced severe inclement weather. By Tuesday morning, vast swathes of the city were submerged. The combined toll of rain and waterlogging across Kolkata and its surrounding districts had claimed ten lives.
